Segen provide a calculator at this link and there is a Romsey based company Solar Technologies that need further investigation. This post will be updated with further info as and when I produce a more detailed plan.

Do the energy companies prohibit the inclusion of battery backup (in the event of gid failure) for safety reasons ?

There will be a combination of renewable technologies that will form an overal solution to the goal of achieving a zero energy usage for the house, which will also contribute towards reducing our carbon footprint. There is a minimum configuration of appliance that need to be operational in the event of a power cut :-
